I can only hope that I was not the only one not surprised by Postman’s description of current day politics. Of course it is all entertainment and let’s face it, how else could it really be? How many people could actually sit down now-a-days and watch a political debate? Back in the 60's and 70's, these debates and speeches like the State of the Union were watched by everyone, mainly because they were on all 4 of the major channels. In Today’s world, candidates have the luxury of being able to act as movie stars because they have so many people working for them doing the dirty work that their main focus is getting people to like them. They all strive to become the “likeable” candidate because our society is inundated with the election, rather than the issues. The US presidency has become more of a popularity contest then anything which is actually a good thing.
I found a funny Onion article, (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/30068) that makes light of how American Politics has become that of fantasy. Although written eleven years ago, its message rings more true than ever. The position of President is the least important it has ever been. He, hopefully not she, is just a figure-head while all of his nerds run around doing the important stuff. Bill Clinton has time to meet with the magical turtle? Of course he does! He didn’t do any of the real work, which is why it is more important than ever that we have a President that we like rather than one that will do the best job. When all said and done, the difference is so minimal that we as a country should pick a President that wins the popularity contest opposed to who has the smarter batch of people working under them.
